Listening and Recklessness

Listening for God's voice is critical as we navigate through life. He may speak to us through His Word, someone giving us wise Godly counsel, opening or shutting certain doors, or other methods. God has lots of resources at His disposal. Once we hear from Him, we must be careful to not become reckless in our journey.

I was reading the story of Balaam in Numbers 22. I love this story! It's kind of like a scene out of Shrek, where a donkey does some serious talking, trying to keep Balaam from reckless destruction. You see Balaam initially listened to God, but after listening, he was about to be reckless. While the donkey was protecting Balaam from his recklessness, Balaam beat his donkey 3 times. You'll need to read the whole story in Chapter 22 and 23 to get the whole idea.

My favorite two verses are verse 20 and 32.

Numbers 22:20 That night God came to Balaam and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you."

Numbers 22:32 The angel of the LORD asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.

Now here is a good word from God..."Do only what I tell you...and don't be reckless." Seriously...that would save us so much trouble if we could just get that right! Ultimately Balaam gets it right...he listens to God...he only does what God says...and he stays steady, not reckless in the process. The result is that God blesses Israel.

So as we learn from Balaam...Listen to God, do only what He tells you, and don't be reckless. It will save us a bunch of grief.
